Do you finish dinner and immediately start thinking…
“I feel like something sweet.”
You’re definitely not alone.
And if you’re trying to lose weight, you don’t necessarily have to fight that feeling every night or tell yourself that sweet foods are completely off limits.
Sometimes, planning a small treat can be a much easier approach.
Here are 10 ideas for something sweet after dinner that can come in at around 100 calories or less.
1. Two or three Squares of Chocolate
You don’t need the whole block! Depending on the chocolate and size of the squares, two squares can be around 60–100 calories.
Put them on a plate, put the block away and take your time enjoying them.
2. Peaches & custard — ½ cup canned peaches in juice with 2 tablespoons low-fat custard: ~80–100 calories.
Use a small dessert bowl and then you will feel like you are eating a bigger serving.
3. A Mini Ice Cream
You can still have ice cream!
Look for individually portioned mini ice creams or ice blocks. There are plenty of options that come in at under 100 calories.
Check the nutrition information on the packet, as brands vary.
4. Strawberries with Chocolate
Take 5–6 strawberries and add a small drizzle of melted chocolate.
You’ll get something fresh, sweet and chocolatey for approximately 70–90 calories.
5. Hot Chocolate
Sometimes you don’t need to eat dessert.
Make a hot chocolate using cocoa, low-fat milk and a little sweetener. Depending on how you make it, you can have a lovely after-dinner drink for around 60–100 calories.
6. Warm Apple & Cinnamon
Slice an apple, sprinkle it generously with cinnamon and microwave it until warm and soft.
It tastes surprisingly dessert-like and a small apple is approximately 80 calories.
7. Frozen Grapes
Try freezing grapes and eating them straight from the freezer.
Around 20 grapes is roughly 70 calories, and because they’re frozen, they can take longer to eat than fresh grapes.
8. Mini Meringue & Berries
Top a small meringue with fresh strawberries, raspberries or blueberries.
Depending on the size of your meringue, you can create a sweet little dessert for around 50–80 calories.
9. Sugar-Free Jelly & Yoghurt
Make up some sugar-free jelly and keep it in the fridge.
Add a spoonful of Greek yoghurt when you want something sweet. You could have a generous-looking dessert for approximately 30–60 calories, depending on the yoghurt and serving size.
10. Chocolate-Drizzled Banana
Take half a small banana and drizzle a small amount of melted chocolate over the top.
You could even freeze the banana first.
This simple dessert can come in at around 80–100 calories.
Bonus idea
11. Sweet popcorn — 1 cup of lightly sweetened popcorn: ~70–100 calories.
Homemade or bought.
You Don’t Have to Give Up Sweet Foods to Lose Weight
Weight loss doesn’t have to mean spending every evening trying desperately not to eat chocolate.
Sometimes it’s better to plan for something sweet.
Choose your portion, put it on a plate or in a bowl, sit down and really enjoy it.
Then when you’ve finished, remind yourself:
“I’ve had my treat. Eating is finished for tonight.”
A small planned treat can be very different from standing at the pantry eating directly from a packet and suddenly wondering where half of it went!
Remember: Calories vary between brands and serving sizes, so always check the nutrition information on the product you’re using.
